Changelog

The production notes

Every update, newest first. The game updates itself the next time you open it, and your saves come with you.

  1. Company photograph

Everyone in one place, for once.

    • NewThe cast: all thirty-seven parts, each with a portrait and a short bio, from the leads down to the stagehand who fell out of the flies.
  2. The lobby opens

The game gets a front of house.

    • NewThis website: an about page, features, a press kit, credits and this changelog. The game itself has moved to /play; your saves are exactly where you left them.
  3. Costume department

    • NewThe leads now dress for the genre: new stills for the musical, pirates, Shakespeare, sitcom, western and tournament segments.
    • NewSeven newly painted sets, including the long gallery and the balcony, which used to borrow other rooms.
    • NewAmbrose appears on stage in one of the finales.
    • BetterThe voice studio splits its longest parts into two recording sessions, so actors are not handed five hundred lines at once.
  4. Casting call

    • NewVoice actors can now apply to audition for the cast.
    • FixedA blemish on Damaris’s cheek, and the numbers on the tournament’s ranking board.

  6. The narrator’s night

The biggest sound update so far.

    • NewEvery narrator line recorded again with performance direction: 2,429 new takes, each pitched for its moment.
    • NewRun three: the Director remembers, and a fifth door appears at the end for players with nothing left to pull on.
    • NewAct III, IV and V open on painted cutscenes (The Rug, The Bill, The Bare Stage), and the run closes on the Curtain. The narrator now reads them.
    • NewSixteen remade sound effects, with longer takes for the ledger, the stamp, horror and science fiction.
    • NewDozens of new faces and poses across hundreds of lines: the cast now act with their hands free when a moment is personal.
    • BetterThe music dips gently under narration, and scenes with no score keep a quiet room tone instead of synth chords.
    • BetterThe stage holds a fixed 16:9 frame on every screen, up to 1536 by 864.
    • FixedOverlapping audio found in a full end-to-end playthrough, and the credits now lead straight back to the floor.

    • NewThe Body Is Not Evidence Storage, a hospital drama.
    • NewA Monster with a Dinner Reservation, a stage musical.

  8. Opening titles

    • NewA title screen with the main theme, and one shared set of sound controls everywhere.

    • NewNineteen music tracks and a cutscene player.
    • NewEverybody’s Curtain Call, a way through the floor’s door together from the second run.
    • BetterThe company, the sitcom and the siege remember earlier runs, and an empty chair stays empty for whoever got out.
    • NewCorvina gets four faces and four carriages across her 142 lines.
  9. The late spine

    • NewCorvina and the Floor Marshal take the stage in their own portraits.
    • NewFour late-story sets: the room by the sea, the privateer’s deck, its becalmed twin and the hulk.
    • NewVacancies: a character who leaves your story stays gone next run, with a route past the empty chair.
    • BetterNoir, cyberpunk and horror scenes relit so dark costumes no longer vanish.
  10. An ending, at last
